# Introduction

BigCommerce is a recurring billing system designed for software as a service (SaaS) companies.

BigCommerce allows merchants to concentrate on building innovative web applications without worrying about how to bill their customers.&#x20;

The Digital River app on BigCommerce's Marketplace enables a client or brand using BigCommerce's store to activate a powerful global enabler solution that can perform the complex and risky back-end requirements of global expansion so they can instead focus on new markets and grow international sales.&#x20;

The Digital River app plugs directly into BigCommerce's platform, enabling flawless, hyper-localized customer experiences from checkout to fulfillment. You can also use it to quickly expand into new countries while we manage local regulatory compliance, taxes, payments, payment card industry (PCI) compliance, fraud, chargebacks, customer support, and more.

# Webhooks

Learn what webhooks are enabled with Digital River configuration.

Webhooks are vital to integrating Digital River with your BigCommerce store. They automatically notify your system about certain events, enabling seamless updates and data synchronization. Once you complete your registration with Digital River and configure the Digital River app, several webhooks are automatically enabled to ensure your store stays updated with real-time information about orders and payment statuses. Below is a list of these essential webhooks and their respective descriptions.

{% hint style="info" %}
Each time you click **Save** on the [Payment Methods page](/bigcommerce/1.0-4/configure-the-bigcommerce-settings/step-2-configure-payments) in BigCommerce, BigCommerce automatically [creates a new webhook endpoint](https://docs.digitalriver.com/digital-river-api/administration/dashboard/developers/webhooks/creating-a-webhook) within your Digital River account. You are responsible for [deleting duplicate or old webhook endpoints](https://docs.digitalriver.com/digital-river-api/administration/dashboard/developers/webhooks/deleting-a-webhook) within Digital River to avoid sending duplicate event data to BigCommerce.
{% endhint %}

# Status mappings

Learn how notifications trigger status updates.

Status mappings provide a comprehensive view of how orders transition through various stages from inception to completion. Understanding these mappings is crucial for interpreting the status updates received from Digital River and their corresponding statuses in BigCommerce. This section details the specific status changes for different types of orders, ensuring clarity and accuracy in tracking an order’s lifecycle.

## Order with a physical product only

An order that contains only a physical product typically follows a standard workflow involving multiple statuses for payment and fulfillment. The table below illustrates the different statuses an order can have from the initial notification received from Digital River through to the completed order status in BigCommerce and Digital River systems.

<table><thead><tr><th>Notification received from Digital River</th><th width="200">BigCommerce payment status</th><th>BigCommerce order status</th><th>Digital River order status</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>none</td><td>Pending</td><td>Pending</td><td>pending_payment</td></tr><tr><td>none</td><td>Pending</td><td>Awaiting Payment</td><td>pending_payment</td></tr><tr><td>order.accepted</td><td>Authorized</td><td>Awaiting Payment</td><td>accepted</td></tr><tr><td>none</td><td>Authorized</td><td>Shipped</td><td>fulfilled</td></tr><tr><td>order.charge.capture.complete</td><td>Pending</td><td>Shipped</td><td>complete</td></tr></tbody></table>

## Order with a digital product only

An order containing only a digital product involves a more streamlined workflow compared to physical products, primarily focusing on payment authorization and fulfillment. The table below outlines the various statuses such an order can transition through, from the initial notification received from Digital River to the final completed order status in both BigCommerce and Digital River systems.

| Notification received from Digital River | BigCommerce payment status | BigCommerce order status | Digital River order status |
| ---------------------------------------- | -------------------------- | ------------------------ | -------------------------- |
| none                                     | Pending                    | Pending                  | pending\_payment           |
| none                                     | Pending                    | Awaiting Payment         | pending\_payment           |
| order.accepted                           | Authorized                 | Awaiting Payment         | accepted                   |
| order.charge.capture.complete            | Captured                   | Awaiting Fulfillment     | fulfilled                  |
| none                                     | Captured                   | Completed                | complete                   |

## Order with mixed products

Orders containing physical and digital products present a more complex workflow than orders with only physical or digital items. The table below describes the various statuses such an order can transition through, detailing how notifications from Digital River synchronize with BigCommerce's payment and order status systems. This ensures that both physical shipments and digital deliveries are accurately tracked and fulfilled.

| Notification received from Digital River | BigCommerce payment status | BigCommerce order status | Digital River order status |
| ---------------------------------------- | -------------------------- | ------------------------ | -------------------------- |
| none                                     | Pending                    | Pending                  | pending\_payment           |
| none                                     | Pending                    | Awaiting Payment         | pending\_payment           |

# Fraud prevention

Learn how Digital River prevents fraud.

Digital River’s in-house fraud engine is Transaction Defender. Based on its evaluation, Digital River accepts or declines a transaction. No manual setup is required. See [Ecommerce Fraud Protection](https://www.digitalriver.com/global-seller-services/fraud/) for details.

{% hint style="info" %}
&#x20;If the **Order Status** in BigCommerce is set to **Manual Verification Required**, the merchant does not need to take action; Digital River manually reviews the transaction.
{% endhint %}

# 3D-Secure

Learn what security measures protect the BigCommerce app.

The European Union's Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) requirements became effective on September 14, 2019. These new requirements, part of the [second Payment Services Directive](https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/payment-services-psd-2-directive-eu-2015-2366_en) (PSD2) regulations, mandate that you conduct two-factor authentication on certain online transactions.

This integration supports 3D-Secure 2.0. Digital River account enables 3D-Secure by default and cannot be disabled. Digital River's Drop-in component brokers the 3D-Secure challenge the shopper experiences at checkout.

See [PSD2 and SCA](https://docs.digitalriver.com/digital-river-api/payments/psd2-and-sca) for more information.

# Multicurrency

Learn how Digital River supports multiple currencies on BigCommerce.

You can configure Digital River on BigCommerce for use with multiple currencies simultaneously. A single Digital River merchant account accepts all Digital River–supported transaction currencies. The merchant must have the desired currencies enabled within their Digital River account.

### What items are restricted for merchants to sell?

For a list of allowed goods, see [Tax codes](https://docs.digitalriver.com/digital-river-api/product-management/creating-and-updating-skus#tax-code).

## Transactions&#x20;

### After I create an account, what is the waiting period before I can process transactions?

Assuming the following statements are true, you can start accepting payment on your store through Digital River immediately:

* You are on a BigCommerce paid plan.
* The [Digital River Payments, Fraud, Tax & Compliance Management app is installed](/bigcommerce/1.0-4/install-the-digital-river-app) on your store.
* You [created a Digital River account](https://docs.digitalriver.com/digital-river-api/administration/dashboard/quick-start-guide#step-1-creating-a-free-test-account).
* Digital River has [passed your certification](https://docs.digitalriver.com/digital-river-api/developer-resources/standards-and-certifications). You will work with a Digital River Project Manager to set a timeline for the launch, including scheduling Checkout Certification.

### How long until the funds are transferred to my bank?

You can find the fund transfer details in your Digital River contract. Contact Digital River for more information.&#x20;

### Will I or my customers receive an additional email or invoice from the payment gateway?

BigCommerce sends the [invoice email](https://support.bigcommerce.com/s/article/Invoices?language=en_US#default). Digital River does not send the invoice email.

## Orders

### How do I troubleshoot an order?

See [Troubleshooting Orders](https://support.bigcommerce.com/s/article/Troubleshooting-Orders?language=en_US).

## Refunds

### How soon after a transaction can I perform a refund?

See [Issuing Refunds](https://docs.digitalriver.com/digital-river-api/order-management/returns-and-refunds-1/refunds/issuing-refunds).

### Is there any time after which I cannot perform a refund?

&#x20;See [Issuing Refunds](https://docs.digitalriver.com/digital-river-api/order-management/returns-and-refunds-1/refunds/issuing-refunds).

### What are the limitations around refunds?

Once you [apply an order level-refund](https://support.bigcommerce.com/s/article/Processing-Refunds?language=en_US#refund-order), you may then only refund the remaining order amount afterward. If you **Refund individual items** at this point, you will receive an error.&#x20;

If you want to issue a refund for fees, or importer of record (IOR) tax and duties for cross-border orders, you must initiate this refund from within Digital River.

### Does the integration support [multiple shipments](https://support.bigcommerce.com/s/article/Shipments) to the same location?

Yes.

### Does the integration support [multiple shipments](https://support.bigcommerce.com/s/article/Shipments) to different locations?

No. Digital River only supports multiple shipments when shipping all items on the order to the same location. Digital River only supports one tax calculation per order. As a result, Digital River does not support shipping multiple items from a single order to different locations. That’s because each location applies taxes differently.

### Does the Digital River payment integration automatically check if I have the correct app installed?

Once you download the Digital River app from the marketplace, Big Commerce will display all the relevant storefront settings. If you do not configure the app settings and ONLY configure the payment settings, no additional validation will flag the store admin that something was not set up for the app to work.

## Additional Features&#x20;

### Are there any fraud filtering options available?

No. Fraud filtering is done automatically by Digital River. See [Fraud prevention and security](/bigcommerce/1.0-4/3d-secure).

### Does it allow authorize-only or recurring/subscription payments?

Authorize-only is supported. Subscriptions are not supported.

## Troubleshooting and payment disputes

### Why did my client receive an error when trying to pay?

&#x20;See Digital River’s [Error handling](https://docs.digitalriver.com/digital-river-api/getting-started-1/standards-and-certifications/integration-checklists/error-handling).

### How are payment disputes handled?

Digital River will handle chargebacks. The merchant will need to handle other payment disputes (e.g., damaged product on delivery).&#x20;

During the implementation process with your Digital River project manager, you will be set up with access to the Solutions Center and introduced to your Digital River direct contacts.

### How do I contact the payment gateway’s support?

To find contact information, click [Support](/bigcommerce/1.0-4/support).

### Can I use my VAT ID to get a tax exemption?

No. The integration does not support VAT ID.
